Red Sox Reportedly Sign Versatile Slugger to Bolster Organizational Depth

The Boston Red Sox have been at the top of the rumor mill for much of this winter. But since they signed Walker Buehler to a one-year $21.05 million deal a month ago, they have remained relatively dormant.
Although the Boston faithful are waiting on a large addition, perhaps Alex Bregman, the team is once again active in adding depth pieces.
"The Boston Red Sox have signed INF Abraham Toro," reported Daniel Álvarez-Montes of El Extrabase, "to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league Spring Training, sources tell El Extrabase."
Toro appeared in 94 games in 2024 for the Oakland Athletics, slashing .240/.293/.350 for an OPS of .643 (87 OPS+) with six homers and 26 RBI.
His defensive versatility may be what caught the eye of the Red Sox brass, playing at first base, second base, third base and left field just last season.
The Red Sox do not have an everyday second baseman, with many pointing to Vaughn Grissom, Ceddanne Rafaela, Romy Gonzalez, and even depth options like David Hamilton platooning at the position.
Depth and versatility are both factors that have been important to the Red Sox roster construction in years past, but a platooned second base leaves the door wide open for the obvious Bregman questions from fans. Why manufacture a rotating door of placeholders when there's a former All-Star on the free agent market who also fills your need for a right-handed bat?
This is not to say the Red Sox have signed Toro in place of Bregman, but with their interest in continuing negotiations with Bregman reportedly dwindling, this could be the final addition to to Boston's infield depth before opening day.
