The San Diego Padres are in a tough spot right now. They have a very talented roster with the potential to compete for the National League West title, the National League pennant and the World Series. But they have a lot of expiring contracts and a lot of money on their books.
The Padres could look to make a trade or two this season that could boost their roster for the year and beyond. If the Padres are going to catch the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West, they're going to need to add some controllable talent to their roster.
Who could the Padres target in trades to boost their roster and win the NL pennant?

Trade proposal 1: Padres add controllable starter
- Padres receive: LHP Andrew Abbott
- Reds receive: LHP Boston Bateman, OF Tirso Ornelas, RHP Ryan Bergert
The Cincinnati Reds have a lot of big league-caliber pitchers. Once Rhett Lowder returns from injury, they could look to trade Andrew Abbott in order to acquire a few top prospects in return.
While the Padres have Michael King and Dylan Cease headed for free agency after this season, they could land a trade for Abbott that would bring in a controllable starter to replace this duo.
Having Abbott on the roster would help the Padres win right now while also setting them up for success beyond this season. He's the kind of consistent lefty that the Padres need at the backend of their rotation and they could land him this season.
Trade proposal 2: Padres win Luis Robert Jr. sweepstakes
- Padres receive: OF Luis Robert Jr.
- White Sox receive: LHP Kash Mayfield, SS/2B Cobb Hightower, RHP Braden Nett
The Padres need to add an outfielder this season, and there might not be a higher potential guy on the market than Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox.
The Padres could trade three of their top ten prospects to land Robert. With so many Padres stars either on expiring contracts or mega-deals, San Diego could use a star like Robert, who is on an affordable deal for the next few seasons.
He would be a great addition alongside the rest of the stars in San Diego. Adding this superstar would steal him before the Dodgers can trade for him, and it would push the Padres ahead in the NL West race.
