Plane passenger stunned by what she overhears older couple say about her
A woman wonders if she is "white trash" after taking a shower at an airport lounge and overhearing the remarks of an older couple.
In a Reddit post this week, the woman recounted how she used the shower facilities in a Delta Sky Club during a five-hour layover after a long-haul flight.
'This isn't your bedroom'
With only 30 minutes allowed in the shower, the original poster (OP) did her best to dry off, but returned to the lounge area with slightly damp long hair. Shortly after sitting down, she overheard a couple at a nearby table making quiet, but pointed remarks.
"I hear the husband go, 'This isn't your bedroom,' and something about how the wife was seeing 'those types' at other lounges," the woman wrote.
Their conversation continued as the wife commented on the "self-conscious" OP pulling her hair back into a bun.
The remarks left the traveler questioning whether she had broken an unspoken rule. She was unsure if airport lounge etiquette dictated that guests should be fully dry before re-entering common areas and an online search was unhelpful.
"I was wearing casual clothes (flare leggings and a T-shirt), but nothing ratty or dirty at all, and I saw plenty of others wearing similar, so I don't think that played into it at all," the OP told Redditors.
'Big players'
Reddit users were quick to reassure the woman. Many dismissed the older couple's remarks as unwarranted and rooted in elitism.
"They probably are not wealthy and acting like they are big players in the lounge," a supporter replied.
"I would have turned around, stared them down and maybe said something about how loud and rude they were. You did nothing wrong."
Several users pointed out that airport lounges are designed to accommodate travelers in transit, including those fresh off long flights who need to shower and change.
One commentator noted that plenty of guests use the showers and return in casual attire, emphasizing that there is no rule against it.
A Shift in Social Etiquette?
According to a LinkedIn article, public interactions have become increasingly harsh, with some attributing it to stress, cultural shifts and a decline in patience for those who do not fit personal expectations of decorum.
Meanwhile, research into generational behavior suggests that older individuals may have a more rigid perspective on public etiquette.

"Even if I had made a social faux pas, or done something they see as trashy, it still seemed so rude," the OP replied to a user in the thread.
"I did look back at them for a few seconds and probably would have stared them down, but the man's back was to me and blocking his wife's face, I wish I'd said something ."
