Louisiana map shows counties to be blasted by up to 7 inches of snow
Many counties in Louisiana have winter storm warnings in place with some set to experience up to 7 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
Why It Matters
The heavy snow and strong winds could cause potentially life-threatening conditions, and Governor Jeff Landry warned the people of Louisiana to "stay off the roads" until the weather conditions have settled.
What to Know
The winter storm warnings are in place across central, southwest and west Louisiana until 9 p.m. local time, the NWS said, while counties in the southeast of the state are forecasted to experience the severe weather conditions until midnight local time.
The service wrote on its alert that the snow accumulations across the state could vary between 1 to 7 inches, meaning that roads, bridges and overpasses will "likely become slick and hazardous."
In addition, the strong winds and weight of the snow on tree branches could "down power lines and could cause sporadic power outages," the NWS added.
Given the impact of the "hazardous" weather conditions on travel, Tuesday morning and evening commutes could become difficult.

The NWS, in its update on Louisiana's winter storm warnings: "If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
"Persons are urged to stay indoors until conditions improve. If you must go outside, dress in layers. Several layers of clothes will keep you warmer than a single heavy coat. Cover exposed skin to reduce your risk of frostbite or hypothermia. Gloves, a scarf, and a hat will keep you from losing your body heat.
"Persons should consider delaying all travel. Motorists should use extreme caution if travel is absolutely necessary."
Landry said in a video posted on X: "To the citizens of Louisiana, we're about to have a major snow event. This new event could be historic. And so I'm asking you to please stay off the roads during and after this event."

As the weather warnings are in place during the times when millions of Americans in the state may have to travel to and from work, Landry said: "If you have to be on the road, certainly we do not want you speeding or following too closely to other vehicles, you're going to have to be mindful of ice on the roads."
