Italian schools allowed to use metal detectors in certain conditions
Metal detectors could be used in Italy's schools in future to prevent acts of violence involving knives and firearms.
The right-wing government of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni published a decree late Wednesday introducing the new rules, in response to several knife attacks.
In the latest incident in mid-January, an 18-year-old was stabbed to death by a classmate in the harbour town of La Spezia.

Under the terms of the decree, under certain conditions, schools will be able to use portable metal detectors, such as those used at airports or major events.
The aim is to prevent pupils from coming to class with weapons.
The checks will be able to take place both in the school and in the neighbourhood.
The attack in La Spezia took place during class. The 18-year-old was stabbed by a classmate of the same age with a knife he had brought with him, which had a 22-centimetre blade.
Meloni's coalition of three right-wing and conservative parties is also preparing a security package that provides for stricter regulations on the possession of firearms.
