Golden retriever puppy puts cat in headlock, hysterics at what happens next
It takes a special kind of cat to keep up with a boisterous puppy like Tig, and it seems he has certainly met his match.
In a viral TikTok video shared to a page dedicated to the unlikely best friends, @wendycollinsgouin, the 5-month-old rescue cat can be seen in a firm headlock by his 17-week-old golden retriever companion.
"My husband Gary heard the two wrestling in our dining room, and he went to investigate because they are always up to something," the animals' owner, Wendy Gouin, 58, told Newsweek.
Gary can be heard from behind the camera asking, "What's going on?" and asking Tig to let the cat, Squeaks, go. However, the pup refuses and instead attempts to hide Squeaks' head by placing his over it. This type of behavior isn't unusual for the mischievous pair.
"Recently, Squeaks has started knocking things off our tables and we end up chasing Tig around the house to get said item out of his mouth," Gouin told Newsweek.
"They are inseparable!" she added. "They sleep together, play, wrestle, and even eat together.
"We jokingly say we need to get an animal backpack for Squeaks so Tig can wear it when we walk."
As a rule, cats and dogs aren't supposed to get along, but perhaps Squeaks is open to his canine friend, as he had a rough start to life.
Gouin explained that the kitten was found in a field when he was just two weeks old and then fostered by the couple.
"He is a survivor!" she said, which may explain why he isn't fazed by a bit of rough play.
So far, the post has over 100,000 likes and many comments. One user said: "Cat is like, mind your own business."
"Squeaks started the brawl," Gouin replied.
"We all know the cat started it," another user joked.
"I don't think Squeaks minds at all. I love how Tig puts his head down saying 'let what go — I don't know what you're talking about,'" a TikTok user commented.
ASPCA Behavioral Sciences Team senior manager Marny Nofi previously told Newsweek that some cats are confident around dogs, while others may need more time to adjust.
Nofi said cats can demonstrate defensive behavior, such as hissing or growling if they are unhappy. Owners are advised never to leave their pets unsupervised if this is the case.
