Elon Musk posted a cryptic video to his X social media platform on Monday morning, which appears to show American economist Milton Friedman extolling the virtues of the free market.

Last week, the Trump administration imposed crippling tariffs of countries around the world, leading to a rout of global stock markets.

In the video, Friedman explains how thousands of people around the world cooperated to make a single pencil, that can be bought in a shop for a "trifling amount."

He describes the "magic of the price system," and why "the operation of the free market is so essential."

Not only does it make products affordable, but it also "foster(s) harmony and peace among the peoples of the world."

This is a breaking news story—more to follow.
