Cubs Predicted To Steal $2.6 Million Pitcher From Loaded Mets This Winter

The Chicago Cubs recently swung a blockbuster trade for Houston Astros closer Ryan Pressly. Pressly will serve as Chicago's new closer, but the Cubs could still be in the market to sign more bullpen talent around him.
FanSided's Michael Brakebill recently predicted the Cubs would follow the Pressly trade up by acquiring New York Mets reliever Ryne Stanek in free agency. Stanek is projected to sign for $2.6 million this winter, per Spotrac.
"One of the more underwhelming connections to the Cubs right now is fireballer Ryne Stanek," Brakebill wrote. "Stanek recorded a 4.88 ERA in 2024, accompanied by a 4.14 FIP. Even though his FIP was lower in this case, I'm still not on board, given that better arms are available in the Cubs' price range. Stanek's production vanished after being traded to the Mets at the deadline, as witnessed by his 7.27 ERA in the second half.
"If Jed Hoyer and the front office are eyeing Stanek, it's likely more than just for a discount compared to other relievers. The Cubs' pitching infrastructure is a strength within the organization, so they likely see something they can fix in Stanek."
Stanek wasn't spectacular in 2024, but he flashed signs of being the pitcher that he was with the Astros.
During the 2022 season, the righty posted an absurd 1.15 ERA in 54.2 innings with Houston.
The Cubs have the chance to land the struggling righty on a deal worth less than $5 million. If they think they can turn him back into his former self, acquiring him at this cost would be very smart.
